Email sent to family and friends on 4/1/2013:
We started off the morning
with a little bit of a scare. Early,
early this morning Evin’s poopy diaper had some blood in it. Our nurse said that sometimes babies with a
shunt like Evin have a reaction where part of their intestines shut down and
can lead to an infection in their belly.
They did a couple of x-rays and ran several other tests during the
morning and did not find any sign of infection.
Everything else about her looked great, so doctors decided to move
forward with feedings as planned. She
had her rectal temperature taken several times during the night, so it is
possible that it irritated her and caused the blood.
Now for the good news…they
moved us back into the NICU this afternoon!
Doctors and nurses were pleased Evin’s progress and were proud to have
us graduate back to the NICU.
Evin had several hours today
without ANY tubes on her face! The PICU
removed the feeding tube and said that in the NICU we would start with bottle
feeding. It was so nice to love on our
girl without any tubes in the way of her sweet face. It didn’t last long because when we got to
the NICU they put the tube right back in and said that she must learn to eat in
increments through a tube before she can feed from a bottle or breastfeed. They are trying to ensure that she can digest
the food before she has to learn to breathe, suck, swallow AND digest her food. She has had 2 feedings so far and seems very
content sleeping with a full belly!
We are praying that she is
as fast of a learner when it comes to eating as she was recovering from
surgery.
We did not meet with the
speech therapist today as expected, so hopefully we can get to that tomorrow.
Thanks for the prayers and
keep ‘em coming!
